Your brain and all of the finite muscles of the ankles, knees and hips are constantly firing and yelling to each other to keep you upright on the board. Your upper body gets a super workout as you need to initiate the power of your strokes from way down deep in your core (lower back, abs, pelvic muscles.) The lower muscles of your body (hips, thighs, glutes & hamstrings) are constantly working, helping you stand upright on your board.
SUP workouts are:
- Low impact with a full cardiovascular workout.
- Targeting arms, abs, thighs and butts – all at once!
- Improves balance and co-ordination perfect for improving your board skills.
- Builds confidence in and out of the water!
Health and Fitness experts from all over the world are quickly catching onto the outstanding cross-training benefits of SUP with top personal trainers in France, England, AUSTRALIA and the USA incorporating it into their sessions!
Stand Up Paddle Boarding looks exactly as it sounds.
You stand on a large surfboard and propel yourself forward with a paddle. But, unlike traditional surfing, you don’t have to wait for the waves.
IN FACT… SUP can be done on lakes, rivers, pools or any large body of water.
SUP popularity has been growing increasingly over the past 5 years and is now widely popular mainstream activity. The sport of SUP has it roots in ancient Polynesia, but it didn’t really enter the modern mindset until the mid 20th-century, when Waikiki’s “beach boys” decided to stand up on their longboards and paddle around with outrigger canoe oars to get a better look at their surfing students, spot far-off waves, take photos for tourists or simply to have something to do on flat days. It wasn’t until the late 1990s that the modern explosion began, thanks to big wave surfer and exercise guru Laird Hamilton picking up SUP and publicising it as simultaneously adventurous, peaceful and solid form of core exercise conditioning for surfers and non-surfers alike.
Since then it’s attracted everyone from the old lady down the street to the hardcore watermen and become the new favorite sport of Hollywood celebrities — Julia Roberts recently bought a board, joining the paddling ranks of Kate Hudson, Jennifer Aniston, Matthew McConaughey, Kelly Slater, Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton, Ben Harper, Chris Leito and Lance Armstrong, among many others. It’s already spawned new manufacturing: the SUP boards are specially designed, longer and wider than traditional surfboards. (approx 4x the volume) but made from an EPS core which is still extremely lightweight. Meanwhile, multiple SUP magazines are now being published and SUP races and wave-riding contests are popping up every month around Australia.
Fitness fanatics wanting to mix it up are buying paddleboards and are now fitting in a SUP workout into their daily routine a few times a week. SUP is the perfect way to escape, get a little activity in and recharge. They feel the workout in places that they don’t when playing other sports such as basketball, cycling, swimming or most other activities.
The future looks pretty bright for those in front of the SUP wave. “When I started the company, it was obvious that it had the potential to be bigger than windsurfing” says Mickey Munoz. “Then I thought, this is going to be as big as surfing. And now I think it’s going to be bigger than windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing – everything put together because it can be done anywhere there is water!!”
We keep hearing that stand up paddling is a great workout for your body, especially for your core muscles. To prove that it is, a SUP company took part in the 2008 Ford Ironman event held in Tempe, Arizona where they let the athletes test a couple of their stand up paddle surfboards. For many of them, SUP involvement in the event was their first introduction to standup paddle boarding. And the response?
“It’s an amazing workout!” comments Heather Fuhr, 2008 Ironman Hall of Fame inductee, “You’re just working your core the whole time”. “It’s so much fun, and such a great workout!”, commented Megan Flanagan of Austin Texas who won her age group in Tempe in her first ever Ironman event. “ I can’t wait to get a standup board back home to train on!”. Ironman champion Chris Leito has had a paddle board now for over a year and loves mixing up his ‘active recovery’ with his son on their SUP Boards. Leito says “Thanks to Stand Up Paddling (and training a bit with Ryan Hall) my marathon run was a lot stronger this year!”
